text: | The dead are placed on a platform either in a coffin or wrapped in mats. The skull is put into a pottery or stone container after about ten months. They go in the direction of Chongwe and then descend underground. Halfway to the land of the dead they are met by an old man, Ta-yoi-ba, and an old woman, Ta-yoi-nu. These ask them about their origin and fate and send them to different places depending on the nature of the death. (details notebook 2. p. 122 following). |
