boys arrive ; doleful singing |
text: |
After a considerable time had past one could finally hear the voices of the young men. They came in a group (169) with oil lanterns and umbrellas and they stopped in front of the door in order to sing. This choral song was probably the most monotonous music I have ever heard. One might have believed that they were singing at the grave of their dearest friend, that is how sad the song sounded. Their melody had a very limited range. They sing like this for about half an hour while the girls sit on the big crushing table in the ante-room all very shy. Finally the youngsters come into the main room and sit down around the fire without paying much attention to the girls. |
