(200) Wakching 19/8/1936. Yesterday Ahon had told me to come to Shiong today as the Lai-pham-bu genna would be held there. This is the equivalent of On-nie-bu in Wakching. Even before sunrise there was such a cloudburst that I was woken up by it. By six o'clock it was still pouring with rain but I was determined to get to Shiong regardless. I started at eight still in storm and rain. The path sometimes was like a little stream but after a while the rain left off a bit. A strong wind pushed the cloud across the mountains but when we arrived in Shiong around nine o'clock the rain had stopped almost completely and the day turned out better than it had seemed at first. The sun, however, did not appear until the evening. When we asked for Ahon we were told he was still asleep but after a little while he did appear. When he had told me yesterday not to come too late he obviously had not thought that I might come at as ungodly an hour as nine o'clock. While he had his breakfast I sat on the pounding table in front of his house and watched the life of the village. |
