Wakching 20/8/1936. With the help of Dzing-ben, a very intelligent man from the Sha-yong-hu clan, I was able to further illuminate the position of the village founder. Tradition has it that Wakching was founded by a man called Dzimshei of the Sha-yong-hu clan. His older brother, Dolo, was founder of Wanching. Both had come with their people from the direction of the Dikhu. With them came Pongmoi, the first Ang of Wakching, from whose line all Wakching Angs came until the dismissal of Pongyong. Pongmoi was Ang but not village founder. He belonged to the Ang-yang-ba clan. Dzimshei set up panjis around the area where the first houses were to be built. (209) This apparently made him the founder of the new settlement. |

At first only the Au-kheang morung which became Dzimshei's and the Ang's morung, and the Balang morung were built. Later the Ang morung was built in the middle of the village so that the Ang would not live so near the edge of the village but rather in the centre. As the population increased the The-phong morung was founded from the Au-kheang morung and Bala split off from Balang. Much later came a migration of people from Chi and Lengha. This was hardly considerable in numbers and apparently it was totally absorbed. |

The descendants of Dzimshei now hold two offices. There is the position of the Neang-ba of the Au-kheang morung and the office of the Thep-wang-nok. The honour of the Au-kheang Neang-ba which proceeds that of the Neang-ba (leader chief) of all other morungs was inherited in Dzimshei's family. But last year Dzimshei's lineage died out in the male line with the death of Chingtang. The position of Neang-ba went to Chinyak who is from the clan but not from Dzimshei's family. |
