(220) Wakching 25/8/1936. As I had heard that today Wanching would celebrate the Ou-nie-bu I started for that village early in the morning. Only Nlamo went with me. The Wakching people did not dare to go to Wanching because of the recently recurring devastations there caused by dysentery. When we started it was still quite foggy but the sun came through on the way there. Unlike the previous days it was quite hot and humid. An entire concert of bird voices came from the trees. The dark cooing of pigeons, the cackling of crows, the loud outcry of some birds which always raise an enormous noise when humans come near them, all that was mixed up with the light and cheerful sounds of a great number of small birds which buzz through the jungle. In the heat the forest was steaming with humidity and the creepers which hung over the path like veils and curtains offered pictures. On this walk one really feels to be in a tropical country and one can delight in the red orchids which shine from the tree trunks. |
