When we arrived in the village we first sat down in the Bala morung. As we were not expected the initial reception was not overwhelming. However, after a little while an ancient old man, a former gaonbura, brought us a few bananas and finally the dobashi, Apong, appeared. The fact that today is the first day of the Ou-nie-bu is not expressed in particular festivity and cheerfulness but the men sit around lazily or sleep in the morung in bright daylight. The women, on the other hand, are busy with domestic chores and on many a platform one can see them spread out snow-white cotton fluff which is then tied up with palm leaves into bales. |
