Several men and boys sit on a platform in front of one house. The platform is, however, not directly attached to it but is built about 3 metres away over a slope. They divide a cow (224) which was killed for the Ou-nie-bu. Whoever wants some of the meat pays the owner. We now go back to the Balang morung and just get there before it starts to pour. I eat my sandwiches and talk with Apong who unfortunately is not a very good informant. Circa 2.5 metre high menhir stands in front of the Balang morung surrounded and partly considerably overshadowed by palm-like plants. It was put up when Apong was a little boy, so about thirty years ago. Stone and plants are surrounded by a narrow fence. A sacrifice is made here during the Moi-hik genna. The ceremonies for bringing in a menhir are reminiscent of those of the Angami. The stone is sprinkled with chicken blood and prayers are offered for fertility and well-being (notebook 5 p. 7). |
