However many shamans are also were-tigers and roam around the forest at night in the shape of a tiger and even go to other villages. One such famous were-tiger is Lem-ang, the old gaonbura of Kongan (see 21/8/1936). The stories told of him are astonishing. He is always supposed to know in which village and in which house there is a sick person and whether it is a man or a woman. Some time ago the mohurrer of Merangkong and another Ao were walking from Tamlu to Namsang. It was already night time when they encountered a tiger in the forest. They shot him but missed and he got away. When they met Lem-ang two days later in Borjan (230) the first thing he asked them was "why did you shoot at me the day before yesterday? I only barely got away". (For another even more curious story see notebook 3 p. 172-4). |
