The Ang of Chi came up to my bungalow quite late in the morning. Angs are not accustomed to having an early breakfast. A friendly smile is all one can get out of him in the way of a greeting. It would be beneath him to raise the hand for a salaam as the other Konyaks do and as I myself have become used to doing. After a brief polite conversation which was made more difficult by Ahon's absence, I got out the cartridge bag which I had ordered specifically for the Ang in Calcutta. It was really quite a nice bag of brown canvas with leather trimmings and straps, much better suited for this climate than a bag made entirely of leather which only gets mouldy and brittle in this great humidity, and poor treatment. However in the eyes of the Ang of Chi this bag could not find his approval. He did not like the canvas and said he wanted one made entirely of leather. I replied that I did not want to force the bag on him and that I could find another use for it, especially as Ahon had asked me for one only yesterday. Then the Ang reconsidered and rather than returning to Chi bagless for a second time he took it as it was. |
