funeral rituals in Wakching |
text: |
In Wanching the dead of all clans are placed into wooden coffins. The ritual is the same as in Wakching (247) and the same words are spoken. When a man from the Balang, Bala or Totang morung has died the girls of the Dzing-shi spread leaves and if a Balang girl dies the other Balang girls spread leaves but they are accompanied by the Dzing-shi boys and these also follow the coffin to the funeral. The khel of the Pandzong morung is divided into two sub-khels and when a man from one dies the girls from the others spread the leaves for him. I forgot to ask whether the two sub-khels are exogamous, the morungs are not. |
