text: We passed through Shiong and then went down a steep narrow path, across a little stream and then through high grass along a hillside. Here already we looked deep into the Sinyang valley and I quietly shuddered at the thought of the hot climb in the evening. But at the moment the day was so beautiful and now we were just passing right through the fields of Shiong where the rice was tall and golden ready to be cut. Where the path is at its narrowest the rice was carefully tied back so that no stalk would be trodden down by the feet of someone in a hurry. Only rarely does a tree interrupt the fields. On one field a lonely girl is already cutting the rice. As we come closer she flees (10) towards her field hut while the Wakching boys laugh at her. Two crossed reeds on the path towards the hut indicate that the approach is now genna during the harvest.
