When we are close to Chingtang, Chingyang suggests that I should hire coolies who would carry me up to Wakching but that is the last thing I want to do and I tell him also that that would be too 'shorom'. However he denies that energetically. The trail leads to the village through tall forests. To the right and left stand low stones but we leave the village to our left and turn towards Wakching. The trail now is good but to my growing disappointment it leads downhill again, often steeply so through little hollows, then across gently sloping fields, but always down. Most of the height so painfully attained is lost again. We cross small deep cut streams and I drink from a spring without considering much the harmlessness or harmfulness of the water. The sun has gone down. Wakching is still far and once again probably almost 3000 feet above us. To top it all a wind has started and grey white-rimmed clouds drift up. It can start to pour any moment but my companions (21) act as though they notice nothing and only enjoy this delightful stroll. |
