I discovered that in Wakching too the The-phong people encourage the frog while the people of the other morungs try to chase it away. In some of the morungs in Mon one can see carvings of the frog swallowing the sun. In other villages as well one finds morungs which support the frog as it tries to gobble up sun or moon. In Wanching it is Pandzong. In Chui it is Nie-dzong and in Totok it also is Nie-dzong. In Chinlong it is Banha and in Kongan, the Dzing-la morung. No reason is given for the custom. During the eclipse all drums are sounded even those of the frog morungs. In Shiong and Tanhai everyone take sides against the frog. |
