If an engaged girl has a relationship with another man he has to pay a fine of two layas to the groom but even adultery committed by a married woman is punished slightly, especially if she does not live in her husband's house. The husband gets into a fight with the guilty man (50) but he will probably suggest that he should take over the girl and repay him his expenses. The woman is not berrated. If however her husband finds his wife with a lover in his own house he will beat him up, not however his wife. Equally the wife in the case of infidelity by her husband will vent her anger against her rival not against her husband. It is supposed to happen quite frequently that engaged girls escape with a lover to Kongan or Wanching. Then the couple will be brought home by an intermediary and the affair will be settled in a friendly manner. |
