The old gaonbura Shopong accompanied me away. He is like Lem-ang of Kongan, a were-tiger, and he confirmed to me that he and the other were-tigers sometimes go to a big water in the south east and there eat the mud of the bank. He showed me very vividly how he walks as a tiger with all the other tigers at his side and behind and in front. When I asked him if he knew where his tiger was right now he said that there were many tigers in all directions. There is no doubt that Shopong himself firmly believes in his own nightly tiger existence and so do the others in Punkhung. A man told me that he himself had seen Shopong in tiger shape. |
