retribution on man who broke taboo on selling after planting |
text: |
For two months after planting it is genna to sell anything away from the village. Now during this time a man had sold one of his mithan to Hungphoi and justified that by saying that the mithan had lived in the jungle after all and that he had not brought it into the village before selling it. The village thought nevertheless that the genna had been violated and enforced the penalty with a somewhat drastic measure. When the man who had sold the mithan in question had another mithan tied up in front of his house during the Oyabu the men of the village came and killed the mithan and they divided the entire meat among themselves. The angry owner now demanded a compensation and he got as far with it that each of the morungs came up with Rs. 10. Of that the owner (128) received Rs. 20 and the Ang and gaonburas Rs. 10 as the man had brought strife into the village by selling the mithan and therefore had to be punished as well. |
