In the evening it is incredibly noisy around my camp. The young men sit around the fire and sing while again and again loud conversation can be heard and the voices of girls, laughter and childrens' screams are raised. (137) No one seems to think of going to sleep until long past midnight. Once I walked through the Ang's house where now girls and boys are sitting together, always more boys than girls. I am told that this is because many married men still like to sing and flirt with the girls while their wives stay at home. Although it is quite dark in some corners I do not quite understand how the couples can actually come together without being disturbed in the girls' 'morung'. The fire always goes on glowing and no one can be sure that someone will not stoke it up to bright flames again. |
