Helipong was an old settlement but it was destroyed a long time ago and then was long left deserted. (200) Only a few years ago the site was colonised again from Chingmiren. The inhabitants are Chang and the real reason why a village was put here recently is that the Chang want to enforce their claim to the land which is on the border to Sangtam and has often been a ground for quarrelling. The fields of Helipong are lower down of course but only millet and job's tears grow here as it is too cold for rice. I could not see that the people had adapted their dress to the climate and I do not understand how the women can walk around in the icy wind without anything on above the waist. |
