(201) The view from Helipong is overwhelming. Across the Wokha Hill one sees over the land of the Lhota and Ao far to the Konyak mountains. At our feet is the entire Sangtam and Chang country and beyond it to the east there are the unknown heights probably inhabited by Kalyu Kengyu called Aoshed here. Chingmei and Panso are both hidden behind mountains but the Patkoi ridge and the Saramati are clearly visible. Here too is the watershed between Assam and Burma. All rivers to the east of Mount Helipong belong to the tributaries of the Irrawaddy and along them one would come directly into Burma if one does not lose one's head on the way. Still there are clouds being blown across the sky. They interfere with photographing, not however with the beauty of this magnificent landscape. Often it seems as though the mountains are spitting out white steam which gathers into clouds covering the sun and being brushed across several mountain ridges until it all dissolves again into nothingness. A wild spectacular display which gets even more fantastic as the clouds turn orange in the light of the setting sun. |
