(213) The village is big and picturesque but I will have more opportunities to get to know it properly. To our surprise there now are already five slaves here. Pangsha handed three of them over without ransom from which one might conclude that they do look upon our arrival with some nervousness. The slaves, a young woman, a young man, a boy of about ten and a little boy and a little girl look pathetic and apparently are half-crazed with fear as they apparently do not understand the Chang of the local people and of course do not know that we have come to set them free. They come from the villages Saochu and Kejok which were destroyed by Pangsha. Saochu is apparently a Konyak village. |
