The inside of the rampart (255) is covered by some banana trunk as according to an old Naga belief banana plants stop bullets. The train of thought is that the "heat" of the bullets causes the wounds and the moist banana trunk cools the heat. The skull tree stands between rampart and village, an erythrina, and there is a drum of the type described yesterday. (see p. 245). Several heads hang on the skull tree or rather on some poles placed across the branches. Among them are those from the attack of Saochu and a dried up foot of a child. Furthermore there are gourd containers and other substitutes for heads fastened to it. |
