In one morung we see a frame for plaiting large mats as they are also used by some Konyak. The bags we see are all made of the very coarse material made from bark fibre. I find a very thin spindle with a stone as a fly wheel. A plaited dish with a small hollow in the centre serves as a base for the whirl. In front of a morung lies a frame for plaiting mats as it is used by the Konyak and described by Hutton (compare in 'Diaries of Two Tours' etc. p. 33). Some mats are of a sort unfamiliar to me and Mills says the plaiting pattern is similar to the one in Manipuri mats. In contrast to Chang villages one sees no mithan and buffalo horns at the house fronts or at least so few that I cannot remember any. My photographs will clarify this and other points |
