negotiations over captured slaves |
text: |
The affair with Nokhu is cleared up in so far as most of the slaves have actually been returned to Wui. Only a small girl has been sold to Burma and cannot be retrieved. Pangsha and Ponyo (Himbu) had acted as middle-men here too (35) but Sanghau, a village two days away from Panso south of Nokhu, still has a slave. They wanted to give him up but today they came with two daos as salaams but without the slave. The owner cannot be moved to part from him without payment and no one in the village seems to have any authority over him. Mills sent them the message that they should either bring the slave to Chingmei or experience the same fate as Pangsha. (Of course a punishment of Sanghau could only be carried out during a future expedition). |
