arrival in Chang village of Noksan |
text: |
After we have crossed the second stream we again had to face a climb of 2500 feet which proved to be more strenuous and hotter than the much longer one yesterday. When we finally reached the top Mills, Smith and I went into the village of Ya or Noksan while Williams and the column moved into the camp which is slightly below the village. Noksan is a peculiar place as Chang and Ao live side by side here and both follow their own customs. (58) The morungs however have a Chang style and most houses also have the tall projecting gables of the Chang houses, but there is not the overlapping of roofs as for example in Tuensang. In front of the Ao houses are the familiar forked offering posts. |
