Among married or rather betrothed couples who live in the same village, the man can refuse to allow the girl such affairs, but supposedly not all men do so. They themselves at least are totally independant until their wives move into the same house with them. I also found out that among the Great Angs the courting is initiated by the girl. If the chosen Ang's son refuses her, this usually causes war between the two villages as such shame can only be washed off with blood. Among the Ben people, however, and also among the members of the Small Ang clan, the courting is done in the usual way, also with Chi, Mon, Tang etc. |
