The Ang, a young man, appears already in his festive regalia with a pair of horns, but his costume is in no way distinguished from that of other wealthy people. Anyway it struck me once again (134) that the Ang of Tanhai does not stand out in any way. If I had not known who the Ang was it would not have been possible to find out during the ceremony. In the Ang house I was told what sort of ceremonies were held at the bringing in of the head and what had happened yesterday. (See notebook 8 p. 165 ff.) Unfortunately there is not a single good informant in Tanhai and Chinyang tends to describe matters as he thinks they are taking place. That way of course the differences between Wakching and Tanhai are lost. The Ang's ancient mother is delighted about the celebration of the head-hunting feast and she says that the Tanhai youth should have carried me into the village on their shoulders for getting them a head. |
