Thus pacified the Bala women agreed last night to come to the morung and so the Thepong men had to give another feast. The Thepong and Aukheang women who had married away to Tanhai, Chingtang and Wanching, and who had also contributed rice towards the work on the morung (4) had come several days earlier to Wakching to pick up their gifts, but as they live in other villages they brought a little rice and madhu as counter prestations. The women from Chingtang received three pigs, those from Wanching two, and the Tanhai women had one. However they came only for the day and did not dance with their relatives. The weather is rainy now and cold. The people complain that they cannot work in the fields. Now is the time for planting. In the afternoon Ahon came and told me something about the planting ceremonies in Shiong. (See notebook 4 p. 130). The ceremonial first planting is done by all men on the same day. |
