In the evening an unusual and not very clear case is brought to Smith's attention. After the fishing excursion on September 6th of last year (I know the date because I took part in it) a Shiong man supposedly was attacked on his way home within the administered area by two Totok men who thought he was a man from Leangha but who noticed their error in time, and admittedly did not hurt him in the least. It is not obvious how he could know that they were after his head as all they did was jump out from behind some bushes. Anyway, as a result Wanshok the Ang's brother and another man from Shiong went off to Totok to demand the payment of a fine. (31) Indeed two Totok men gave them a fine in the form of two pigs. That finished the matter temporarily until Wakching got the idea that they too could claim a fine as the attack had taken place on Wakching territory. However as none of the immediate participants could be found the case has to remain unresolved for the time being. Leangha finally paid Smith the fine which Mills had imposed last July because of the affair concerning the Chen head which had been carried from Hungphoi to Mon. |
