At first not much was going on in the village. Several men were sitting in front of the Ang morung and started to decorate their baskets with palm leaf strips. Women were carrying wood and water into the Ang's house and children were playing on the platform which had been built yesterday. Three older men came across the opening, one carrying a basket on a long bamboo stick, another with a smouldering fire. Walking after them I go down the path along which the graves are situated. They stop at a platform with a house for the dead and they start fastening the basket which contains rice and other food to the frame of the platform. They also light the fire under the protective roof. The deceased is the son of one of the older men who happens to be the Benba. A dancing hat with feathers is also set onto his platform. He died four months ago. |
