I had thought that my coolies would be dead tired and hardly capable of carrying my burdens to Hungphoi (81) but I had underestimated their endurance. They are fresh and full of life and still in a festive mood. First the trail to Hungphoi goes over a declining ridge with jhum land on both steep slopes. The coolies have gone ahead and when I come to a place where a large rock rises above the slope I see them standing in a row on this rock, dancing and brandishing their daos. When they take up their loads again to go on, those who do not carry anything just then continue to dance and one of them is swinging his dao in his right hand, and in his left hand my typewriter instead of a shield. |
