The reason why the the Ang is going to Wangla (97) is a disagreement between both villages which truly seems grotesque. Almost two years ago some Wangla people were going to the funeral of an Ang's son in Chi. By coincidence (as I found out this had nothing to do with the Ang's son's funeral) Chi had captured a head at the same time from Totok. On their return the Wangla men then bragged that they had received a piece of the Totok head which apparently had not been true. Hungphoi heard this and it added some unfriendly comments to it to the effect that bringing heads across the border was prohibited. Wangla then declared that Hungphoi had made up the entire story and repeatedly demanded a fine of 100 Rs. from Hungphoi. But Hungphoi did not pay the fine and now declared themselves to be insulted by the suggestion that they had invented the head tale while it had in the meantime been determined that the rumour really had come from Wangla. Therefore it in turn demands a fine of 100 Rs. from Wangla and the Ang and several older men now are going to Wangla to discuss the matter. |
