Here the men of Oting are supposed to meet us and then move into the village with the head. Indeed after some time some of the very young boys arrive and sit down at the bank. Most of them are not tattooed yet and strangely enough their faces seem almost naked next to those of the slightly older boys. The head had been kept nearby in a field hut. The boys sharpen their daos on the stones of the river bed, (105) bring out rice and apparently are preparing themselves for a longer wait. That is because all younger men want to come here to the river and then go together to the village with the head. But as is the custom among the Konyak, they take their time and so Chingai suggests that I go ahead to the village, eat something and then watch the bringing in of the head and all further ceremonies. |
