text: I now go through the village. It is situated at the highest point of a narrow ridge and it consists only of two rows of houses built closely together. They completely adjust themselves to the rocky and uneven ground. For some houses a natural rock is used as a foundation and they are perched so high that the inhabitants have to climb up a tree trunk with carved steps. The uneven terrain naturally causes a great deal of variation in the type of building. (199) But even beyond that the houses show a surprising degree of variation.
