In addition I also find out some things about what goes on in the girls' morung. Every clan has one or several girls' dormitories in each khel. These are small, low buildings with four or eight bamboo beds along the side walls. These beds seemed very narrow to me. Married girls or those who have a constant lover stick their lover's traditional presents into the wall or roof above their beds. These presents are artistically plaited bowls with a pedestal for betel leaves, plaited fans and flat sticks of split bamboo incised with all sorts of ornaments and drawings. Furthermore above each bed several of the flat bamboo or wooden clubs are placed which the boys use during fights between the khels. (217) A girl who does not have all these objects hanging above her bed is still free and anyone who wants to and does not belong to a prohibited clan can try his luck with her. At the beginning of the night the lovers lie next to each other but as soon as the fire goes out sexual intercourse begins for which the girl apparently is on her back, the man on top of her. |
