poverty and ineffectiveness of Ang |
text: |
No fields are being planted for the Ang Chinkak this year as he can neither feed the workers nor does he have the rice for planting. Because of his poverty two of his three wives, both from Shiong, have left him. One of them married a Ben man in Shiong, the other is living in another house of the Angban and supports herself by trading with the plains. (See notebook 12 p. 23). When I ask Shankok why they do not depose Chinkak and take a new Ang he says that he is actually quite good at the most important task for an Ang, taking the omen for the new fields together with the Neangbas, and negotiating disagreements. I doubt the latter however as nowadays most differences are settled by the gaonbura. |
