Ang's house building in the past |

All older men emphasise that in the old days things were totally different when an Ang's house was built. Then a building as big as a morung was built and each morung gave a huge post decorated with tiger carvings. In addition came people from Chi, Shiong, Tanhai, Chingtang and Kongan. The Ang of Chi would bring a mithan, Kongan brought salt and pan leaves, and the other villages, building material. (See notebook 6 p. 64, also notebook 12.) This year too the Ang of Chi had offered to bring a mithan but the Wakching people declined as Chinkak cannot feed his guests and they also are a bit ashamed to be building such a small Ang house. (253) They also refused the help of the other villagers. It took three days when a proper big Ang house was built and the separate parts of the roof and walls were divided among the morungs. Two each covered one side of the roof and one did the front. |
