text: (27) Already in the afternoon Shankok explained that it would be impossible to get people again tomorrow to be measured and when we cautiously mentioned that a few women too were desirable he said that for them this was even more 'shorom' and they were far too afraid. Late at night Shankok came to me once more and told me in a whisper how appalled the people had been about the measuring and they only had gone along for my sake. Even if he were offered 10 rupees he would not endure this again and for no more than 2 annas it was a real disgrace. How that new Sahib had grabbed around on his forehead and around his eyes as though he were a corpse, it was out of the question to get more people to come. They would have liked to run away today already. In any case Kauffmann does not seem to be a great success with them for reasons not quite clear.
