text: Formerly there were many buffaloes in Wakching. They lived in the forest near the village and often came into the village, especially towards evening, to lick salt. There were no huts or stables for the animals. Later on the people of Wakching also kept mithan but as both kinds of animals always caused a lot of damage in the fields, and as it also became easier to buy the buffaloes for sacrifices in Assam, people finally gave up keeping the animals. Meat of mithan is not eaten by many, especially Ben people, while buffalo meat is considered excellent.
