Every woman gives birth to her first child in her parents' house. She then goes to her husband's house during the same night. Women give birth in the long room where the pounding table is found and they do so in a squatting position (64) with their thighs kept as much as possible in a horizontal position. One of the helpers supports her back and tries to push out the child. If there is a delay one of the women sometimes inserts her hand into the birth channel to draw out the child. The naval cord of a new- born infant once it falls off is buried next to the main post of the house. |
