text: While Nlamo was busy setting up my tent I noticed that my table and chair were nowhere to be seen. (116) I asked Nlamo about them who had not at all noticed that they were missing and now was making a stupid face. Of course he had forgotten them but he immediately assumed the position typical of most native servants and declared that it was not his fault but that I should have remembered myself as they were always near me. I should have told him that I wanted them taken and this after almost a year of going on tour with me. When I said that they simply had to be fetched he acted insulted. Finally Yongem was sent back to Wakching to get them. Of course it was below his dignity to carry anything himself and he hired two boys who I then had to pay.
