Somehow we came from this topic onto the battles of former times. His father still had fought against Wanching and it seems as though challenges and agreed meetings on certain spots had existed them. At these however the warriors did not come close to each other but only threw their spears and later also shot at each other. It hardly came to a closeup fight. Nowadays in the unadministered area there are still posts on high platforms who guard the workers in the fields; and fields which are too close to enemy territory are not worked by individual families (141) but by an entire morung which goes out to plant and harvest there. But war has its rules too. It is said for example that one must not cut off a head at night even if one has killed an enemy. Whoever avoids this rule causes Ghawang to be angry with him and give him no more children. On the other hand there is no law against taking the heads of defenceless women and children during the day. |
