the storage capacity of Shankok's rice granaries |
text: |
Then I looked at Shankok's rice granaries with him. He has five of them. Even now there are enormous quantities of rice in them. I counted forty big baskets of rice and nine with millet. Each of these storage baskets contains about sixty loads of rice. (200) The last harvest brought in about twenty of the baskets. Old and new rice is used indiscriminately and Shankok says that the grains, especially millet, in some baskets are already more than ten years old which however does it no harm. The rats cause much damage but nothing is done against them. The Oting people on the other hand build their granaries on poles with wooden discs as a protection against rats. The men of Wakching know about that but they do not adopt the building style. |
