Once at night from the house of Apong (Wanching) a laya, and 30 Rs. and one lengta [were stolen] - he didn't know whether a man from Wanching or Wakching (173) had done it. So he asked Lem-ang. The latter told him that he had seen as a tiger three Yungya men, whom he described and told even their names, crossing the river. They had wrapped a heavy stone in Apong's lengta and thrown it into the river saying: "Just as this stone will disappear and never be recovered, so our crime shall remain undetected". Ang Lem-ang as tiger also heard them talk about stealing the things from Apong's house. Then Apong sent for the three men, who admitted everything and also that they (174) had seen a tiger when crossing the Dikhu, and gave him back his property. But one of the men had spent the 30 Rs. so he is now serving in Apong's house (as a "slave"). This happened about a year ago (1935). (Apong's full name is Pongyong). There are two kinds of thibu, the one who goes during a trance to the land of the dead, the other kind who only dreams. |
