From Longkai we drove to another small Zemi village, and then to Asalu. This was the very first British headquarters and the ruin of the Treasury building, constructed of stone and mortar, is still standing on a broad ridge which now serves the school children as a football ground. There is only one morung, and perhaps some 15-20 houses, standing to both sides of an open space. The people wear some items of Naga dress and some nondescript wrappings, but few tailored pieces. |

They offered us some rice beer in the morung, but did not evince the extravert Naga spirit I remember. Lahkar too thought them very un-Nagaish. The day was beautiful and we had a pleasant return drive. |
