text: The approach to Shangnyu is through groves of palm-trees grown mainly for the sake of their leaves used for thatching.
text: The village is large and the houses are scattered over a wide area. They stand in-between trees and kitchen gardens and from no point does one see large numbers of houses as many are hidden by trees.
