text: At the lower edge of the forest is a rest shed and a high platform, and from this we looked down on the golden fields covering the slopes below us. There were also fields on a low ridge linking Wakching land with Kongan. The jhums below us were cultivated for the first year of the present cycle. The [?land] had been fallow for 8 years,a period which is now general and compares to the 15 years of fallow usual in 1936. A few trees had been left standing but most of them died during the burning; a few had survived heavy pollarding and the fire.
