text: There was an atmosphere of excitement and though the workers were covered in sweat, they seemed to have unbounded energy and to enjoy the common activity. Shoupa devoted himself mainly to us, but now (63) and then gave some order. However, any direction seemed superfluous for everyone seemed to know exactly what to do, and there was perfect coordination between the groups. Most of the older men were virtually naked and there were some very fine athletic figures. The younger men wore largely black shorts, and a few of the small boys wore in addition white undervests, entirely superfluous in the fierce heat.
