We were welcomed by Ahon's son, an emaciated man of about 50 with the full face tattoo, and his grandson Henphong. The latter is the younger brother of Chinwang, one of the present Ministers, who had written to me in May. Henphong was dressed in shirt and trousers and wore spectacles. He is tall and slim, with very long and elegant hands. The house is basically the same as it was in Ahon's days, but there are numerous modern articles, such as cups, a teapot, plates, a clock and various photographs. The Minister's father, however, clearly leads the old life. He is said to be a heavy opium smoker and his appearance is certainly consistent with this belief. |
