The Chekrama Gaonbura turned up and confirmed the statement of the village as to the fixing of their boundary by Mr. Shaw at the 20th mile. He offered the lives of all the village on oath. It is curious that there should be no record of this on the file of the case. I will have further search made in office. Counted Phekekrima, a village once of 300 houses now reduced to 50 odd. Goitre very prevalent and many idiots. Reached Cheswema in a storm, 12 miles. Phekekrima complains against Ivikhu's colony which seems to have started general annexations. Phekekrima however asked for trouble by going and clearing land as near as they could to Ivikhu's village they had not touched for at least a generation and which they claimed in the right of some ancestors who had lived at Mewhima where Ivikhu is now located. I promised to send the Sub-Deputy Collector to lay provisional boundaries which will no doubt follow the stream between the two villages. Ivikhu has made himself very troublesome in Mokokchung by 'Faslaoing' people away from their villages and using threat to the Gaonburas to get them to let them go. |
