Visited the fort and transport lines and heard the Khuvishe murder case. The transport ponies are just too few. There are twelve of them and they can keep the garrison in rice and themselves in paddy by incessant trips to Nakachari but there is no margin. When extra work is required to carry the loads of an escort to Kohima there are not enough and there is no margin for sickness, and most of the ponies have had sores, which I think are principally due to overloading. The road to Nakachari is very steep, crossing three ranges and two maunds is too heavy a load for the small ponies. The saddles are also probably too long. There should be 20 ponies at Mokokchung. |
